Our history

Mason Matters is a non-profit community capacity-building and community mobilization that is dedicated to improving the health status of Mason County residents.

Mason County Health Planning Council, which became known as Mason Matters, was initiated in 1991 as an informal group of citizens and providers concerned about health-related issues in Mason County. The Council delt with specific health issues over the years such as dental and medical care and determined in 1995 to formalize the organization with the support of Mason County Department of Health Services and Mason General Hospital.

In July 1997, the Health Department completed the county health assessment “Mason County 1997 Health Profile”. At the same time council membership was being expanded to represent the diverse citizens of Mason County more completely. In January 1998, the council began working on a vision and a name for the project. In February 1998, the group initiated an intensive review and open discussion of the health assessment and by March the vision statement was finalized, and the project officially became Mason Matters-Creating a Healthy Future.

In May 1998, during a day-long work retreat, members of Mason Matters identified Domestic Violence and Teen Pregnancy Prevention as the Tier One issues to be addressed.

At that time, Mason Matters structure included a Board of Directors and an Executive Director who managed the Mason Matters day-to-day activities and health improvement projects.

Mason County Public Health and Human Services (MCPH), Public Hospital Districts #1 and #2 provided on-going financial investment to support Mason Matters over the years. Additionally, applications for local, state and federal grants and grant awards helped support the various community initiatives and projects.

Between 2017-2019 Mason Matters structure changed and resulted in the community development of the Mason County Health Coalition (MCHC) which includes community coalition members, a coalition executive committee, public health, community workgroups, and community projects with Mason Matters continuing in oversight of capacity building, mobilization and the fiscal arm of the organization.

Our history

Blue Zones Activate Mason County brought together local leaders, organizations, and residents to focus on long-term health and well-being by improving how people live, move, eat, and connect. The initiative centered on practical, policy-driven work—strengthening local food systems, improving parks and walkable spaces, supporting community gardens, and helping create places that make healthy choices easier every day. Over two years, this effort helped build momentum around projects like the Catalyst Park Demonstration Garden, downtown walkability improvements, and partnerships with organizations such as Mason Health and the Salmon Center.

As the Blue Zones Activate project concluded, the work didn’t stop—it transitioned. That momentum now continues through Mason Matters, which carries these efforts forward under local leadership. Mason Matters builds on the foundation created by Blue Zones, focusing on food access, community spaces, and partnerships that support a healthier, more connected Mason County for the long term.
